When it comes to training puppies not to relieve themselves in the house, there are a few simple rules to understand and a few procedures to follow and it will make the process of puppy training much easier. When training a puppy, understand that it doesn’t know right from wrong and needs to be taught this. This guide outlines the best way to carry out puppy house training.

    How to Train a Puppy

    •    The key to puppy training is to catch the dog in the act as this is the best way for the animal to associate the action with the consequences. Punishing a puppy long after the action will just confuse it and make the process of training puppies much harder.

    •    Puppies need feeding more often but less quantities than adult dogs and this can pose problems for the puppy training process as they will need the toilet more. This however is also advantageous when it comes to training a puppy because you have more opportunities to correct the behaviour.

    •    The key to successful puppy training is consistency so develop a schedule. Using a puppy crate makes it easier to observe the animal’s behaviour. Take your dog out after meals so that he can relieve himself out there and continually use commands such as ‘get busy’ etc until the puppy does go to the toilet. Another key part of training puppies is to heap reward on him when they have done something correctly so make sure you do so every time the puppy goes outside.

    •    When you train a puppy, accidents are unavoidable and it is how you deal with them that determines the success of the puppy training. Don’t over punish the animal or rub his nose in the mess. Not only is this very cruel, it could lead to the puppy not going to the toilet around you at all, inside or out.

    •    Don’t used ammonia based cleaning products as this smells like dog urine and will make the dog think that another dog has gone inside the house, thus hindering the puppy training program.

    •    Getting everybody in the house to follow the method for training puppies will help to speed up the process.
