There are a number of methods to stop a dog barking and some have proved to more effective than others for different dogs. Generally, you should be able to see a noticeable difference to the dog barking within one week, if not, try a different method. Read on to find out how to stop a barking dog.

How to Stop a Barking Dog

    •    A good method to stop dog barking is to fill an old drinks can or tin food can with ten 1p or 2p coins and tape the top up. This will make quite a distracting noise which can be used every time the dog starts barking. When you stop a dog barking, make sure you heap plenty of praise on them so they know they’ve done a good thing.

    •    Another good method of stopping dog barking is to get hold of a (clean) kitchen/bathroom cleaner dispenser and fill it with water. Every time the dog barks, spray the water in the dogs face. Once he stops, make sure you praise him lots.

    •    A more expensive and high tech option to stop a barking dog is to invest in an ultrasonic barking device or collar. These can sense the dog barking and emit a high pitched sound that the dog doesn’t like but humans can’t hear (much like a dog whistle). These can be very effective and cutting down on dog barks.

    •    Shock collars work on the same principle to stop a dog barking. They sense the dog barks and start vibrating which distracts the dog. They are not harmful and can be very effective.

    •    A citronella collar is another variation on the same idea to stop a barking dog but unlike vibrating or emitting a high pitched sound, they release a citronella scent which dogs dislike. They will soon associate dog barking with the bad smell and stop.

    •    One final method to stop a dog barking is very time consuming and labour intensive but will provide good results. To stop a dog barking using this method, you need to keep a dog lead on the animal at all times and whenever the dog barks, give a quick but firm tug and say ‘no’. With time and persistence, this can be one of the best ways to stop a barking dog.
