How to train your dog to play frisbee?
The term frisbee is a registered trademark of the Wham-O toy company and is generically used to describe all flying discs used to play. A flying disc is a disc-shaped glider that is generally plastic and roughly 20 to 25 cm (7.9 to 9.8 in) in diameter, with a lip. The shape of the disc, an airfoil in cross-section, allows it to fly by generating lift as it moves through the air while rotating.* Playing with a flying disc with your puppy is always a lot of fun and it is also a great exercise for all puppies. If you would like to teach your dog to play a flying disc, below you can find some useful tips.
Get some flying discs and some treats for your dog. Present a new toy to your dog so it gets excited about the thought of having a new thing to play with! Associate the new toy with some of your dog’s favourite treats. You can be sure your dog loves it especially if you put some of the peanut butter on the edge of the flying disc!
Now when your dog already loves the new toy, get your dog to desire even more the disc by using it as a ‘war’ toy. As your dog learns to grasp the disc, the next step must be to show your pooch how to release it. When your puppy holds the disc, say ‘give’ and keep a treat in your hand. Take the disc and give your dog its prize. Then give your pooch the disc back and keep on repeating this step.
The next step is to teach your dog how to catch the flying disc and how to return it to you. Tell your dog to sit and toss the disc from very close. If your dog catches the disc, remember to praise it! Until this becomes a game the treat will be the reward for giving up the disc, and that's how pet will learn to bring the disc to you to be thrown again. Keep on increasing the distance and enjoy playing Frisbee with your dog!
