Fetching is quite an easy trick to teach and will give you endless fun and rewards once you manage it. This article will help you out with some top tips on how to train a dog to fetch.

    Teaching a Dog to Fetch

  • When you start training it would be a good idea to keep your dog on a lead this will help you to control your dog.

  • When you train a dog to fetch it is a good idea to use your dog’s favourite toy as bait. A dog is much more likely to go and collect a toy he wants to play with than a twig at first.

  • Make sure when teaching a dog to fetch that you have a good supply of treats on you. It is really important when training a dog that you praise for positive actions. Every time your dog fetches the toy you should give him a treat.

  • You have to have your dog’s undivided attention before throwing the toy, if you don’t you might find your dog won’t even notice and you will end up fetching it yourself. also if your dog is on a lead make sure you throw it at a distance which means you wont have to release the lead.

  • wait for the dog to grab the toy in his mouth, this is when you will need to choose your command word like ‘bring’ or ‘fetch’. If he comes back to you immediately then reward him with a treat. If your dog doesn’t come back on his own give the lead a little tug as you repeat your command word. When your dog eventually brings the toy back you should treat him.

  • The key to how to teach a dog to fetch is simply repeating the exercise. The more you train your dog to fetch the more likely he will understand you. Dogs can forget so keeping tricks fresh in a dog’s mind is important.
