Caring for a pet can be a fantastic way to teach children about responsibility, compassion and empathy.
But while most children at some stage will ask mum and dad for a new puppy, kitten, or guinea pig, it is important that children understand how to get the best out of their new furry arrival.
So what are the key things your children need to know when it comes to looking after a new fluffy friend?
To help parents and children, Pets at Home have joined with Blue Cross to give their top tips on introducing a new pet to the family and getting the children involved in its care.
This year Pets at Home are hosting My Pet Pals Summer Activity Club, a series of interactive workshops designed to teach children how to care for pets responsibly.
