Rabies Brit No2: New bite victim fear as gran battles for life
Docs are awaiting test results on the patient, believed to be from Leeds.
The suspected case — confirmed last night by the Health Protection Agency — follows that of a gran in her 50s who is fighting for life in a London hospital after being bitten by a puppy in India.
The two cases of the killer disease are not thought to be linked. The second victim — now in hospital — may have been bitten by a dog in Pakistan.
The Sun revealed yesterday how the gran was sent home THREE times by docs who failed to realise she had rabies.
A probe has been launched by the Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford, Kent, which she visited twice.
The victim remains critically ill at London’s Hospital for Tropical Diseases. A source said: “The family has been told it is unlikely she will survive.”
Twenty people who came into contact with her — including six relatives — have been vaccinated against the illness.
There have been eight rabies scares in the UK this year but the gran’s is the only confirmed case.
