Shelter Dog Sunday - Martha
Every Sunday we are running a special feature on a rescue dog looking for a loving home. This week the spotlight is on Martha, a sweet lady who is 9 years of age!
Battersea Dogs and Cats Home is the well-known backdrop of ITV's Paul O'Grady - For The Love Of Dogs but what you see on the show is only a fraction of the work that the shelter do. Battersea takes on over 9000 cats and dogs a year, including Martha - a gorgeous Staffordshire Bull Terrier at Battersea's Old Windsor Branch.
Martha - who was named by staff after the 17 year old Great British Bake-off contestant - was brought in as a stray in April, making her stay at Battersea four times longer than the average dog. She is a lovely lady and very popular with volunteers but due to her age she is a little set in her ways and will require a calm, adult-only retirement home. She needs owners who will be dedicated to continuing her training and socialisation with other dogs.
Potential adopters need not be to put off by her age or her breed. The image problem Staffies have unfairly anquired means that shelters across the UK are overflowing with the breed, despite their ability to be loving and gentle companions. Battersea are running a campagin to prove that Staffies are Softer Than You Think - so don't hesitate to head over to their website and find out more about this sweet and affectionate breed. And their life span is on average 12 years, with some recordings of Staffies as old as 19, so you will still have many years of companionship and joy with Martha.
Although Martha would rather not live with children, other dogs or cats, she could live in just about any location, so long as her retirement home was calm and relaxing!
With some time to setttle in and the right owners, Martha will make an affectionate addition to her new family.
If you could offer Martha a home to live out her golden years in, please contact Battersea Dogs & Cats home on 08435 094444 or contact them by email on at [email protected]. Martha's reference number is 295428.
