Ronnie the spaniel – nicknamed Alcopup – discovered 15 litres of illicit hooch in one cell alone.

A sniffer dog let loose in Britain’s biggest jail found 57 litres of home-made booze.

Ronnie the spaniel – nicknamed Alcopup – discovered 15 litres of illicit hooch in one cell alone.

Officials reckon she also thwarted an escape bid after finding a length of knotted sheeting during her 10-day search of Wandsworth Prison in South London.

Now angry prisoners have threatened to kill the one-year-old bitch.

A source revealed: “The dog may be man’s best friend – but he is hated by some of the lags.

“The animal took out the whole supply of hooch for one wing and helped stop an escape bid.

"The scale of the find was astonishing and prisoners now live in fear of a visit from the dog.

"He is a canine version of a prison officer. There have even been death threats.”

A Ministry of Justice memo reported that the dog helped lead staff to a number of suspect cells, which were then searched.

It found enough booze to fill more than 100 pints. A number of inmates were charged with offences at the jail, which can hold up to 1,665 prisoners and is the largest in the UK.

A Prison Service spokesman said yesterday: “We take the issue of prisoners’ access to illicit items extremely seriously.

“We use specially trained dogs to search for drugs and mobile phones, and have 12 dogs trained in illicit alcohol detection.”
