The Daily Mirror is backing the Dogs Trust Honours 2012, and our readers will choose the winners of the Hero Pet Dog and Hero Service Dog awards

Some save lives while others bravely search for bodies and others have recovered from brutal attacks in the line of duty - but all of them are hero dogs.

The Daily Mirror is backing Dogs Trust Honours 2012 and is asking for readers to vote on the shortlist for the Hero Pet Dog and Hero Service Dog.

The awards are now in there fifth year and aims to highlight heart-warming stories of devotion and courage.

The public have been nominating via www.dogstrusthonours.co.uk since March and now the shortlist is in.

The winners in 4 categories will be presented with their awards at the red carpet Dogs Trust Honours event - hosted by Dragons' Den star Deborah Meaden - at The Honourable Artillery Company in London on May 21.

In the category of Hero Dog - the award for dogs that perform amazing acts of bravery or courageous feats – the two winners of Hero Pet Dog and a Hero Service Dog will be chosen by Mirror readers.

And below are the shortlist candidates in each of the two categories.

Eamonn Holmes, who is involved in judging the other categories, said: “I’m delighted to be on the judging panel for Dogs Trust Honours.

“The Mirror readers will have a hard task on their hands when choosing their ultimate Hero Dog as all the finalists are such worthy winners.

"In the past year Dogs Trust has shown me how much of a difference a dog can make to your life as my wife Ruth and I adopted little Maggie from Dogs Trust Harefield.

“I now know firsthand how much happiness dogs can bring to our lives and in some cases, as these hairy heroes prove, can be lifesavers. They’re all hero dogs in my eyes.”

You can have your say by voting for your Hero Pet Dog and Hero Service Dog below. The closing date for voting is Friday 4th May.
