Last updated: 20/05/2020

Having a healthy dog should always be the number one priority for any pet owner. This means finding the right dog food, wet or dry, that agrees with your dog. This can be troublesome, as most people don’t know what to look for in the right feed. That’s why we’ve gone through and reviewed a number of our favourite wet dog foods to help you decide, and highlighted some of the most important things to look for in a good quality food product.

Wet dog foods generally have a long shelf life, are extremely palatable, appetising and suitable for picky eaters. Since they require minimal chewing they are ideal for dogs with dental issues. Wet foods use fresh or frozen meat, rather than rendered meat (the meat that remains after extracting moisture and fat). Although they’re generally more expensive than wet foods, most dogs take them right away, unlike lots of dry feeds and treats.

To help you successfully navigate through the all of dog food choices on the market, we have compiled a list and reviewed 9 of the best wet foods for dogs. If you haven't got time to read the full article, here's the summary of the dog foods we've reviewed!

Keep in mind that there is no universally good or bad wet dog food. It all depends on what your dogs needs needs and what suits their lifestyle best. While you do your best to make healthy food choices, in the end, it is your dog’s personal preferences that will have the most influence on what type of wet dog food you choose.

Before making your purchase, we've talked through a few key considerations you need to take into account, and answered any questions you might have.

Is wet dog food better than dry?

Both wet and dry dog food have their health-related advantages and drawbacks. For example, wet dog foods are rich in water and therefore require minimal chewing. This makes them perfect for dogs with dental problems. On the other hand, since they require minimal chewing, in dogs with otherwise healthy teeth, they can lead to excessive tartar build up and gum problems. Because of its high moisture content, wet food is perfect for dogs with urinary tract problems and dogs that are not big fans of drinking water.

Dry foods have more dietary fiber than wet foods. That is why dry foods are better in keeping the digestion steady. Dogs that are constantly fed with wet foods can be prone to loose stools and diarrhea.

When it comes to the protein content, wet foods are richer than dry foods. Wet foods can be more practical for highly energetic and working dogs, but sometimes are not recommended for dogs with kidney and liver problems because they cannot properly metabolise the ingested proteins- but as always, see how it fares with your dog. This isn’t always the case.

Wet foods also have higher fat content than dry foods. If your dog is under or overweight, you might have a preference for wet or dry food.

How much wet food should I feed my dog?

Follow the recommended serving instructions for your dog's size and age. A handy tip is to weigh out your servings to make sure you are giving your dog an appropriate serving size. A 'cup' of food can vary a lot from person to person, and can have a big impact on your dog's food intake.

If your dog eats only wet food, the right amount would be 3oz of wet food per 3-31/2 pounds of body weight per day. It is advisable to divide this amount in two or three meals.

Is it okay to mix wet and dry dog foods?

As previously stated, both wet and dry dog foods have their pros and cons. Mixing the two will give the benefits of both, and is totally okay.

If you are not sure about mixing these two types of dog foods, do not hesitate to consult with your trusted vet or canine nutritionist. They can help you make the best combination that will keep your dog or puppy healthy.

It should be noted that mixing wet and dry foods is not recommended for dogs with specific dietary requirements (diabetes, kidney problems, food allergies, liver issues) that need strict feeding regimens and schedules.

What should I look for in wet dog food?

When deciding which wet dog food is the best option for your dog, you need to consider the following:

  • Primary ingredient – high-quality wet foods all consist of one primary ingredient. It is important that the food’s number one ingredient is high quality, real meat. Real meat provides sufficient amounts of lean protein necessary for maintaining your dogs health.
  • Additional ingredients – all ingredients matter. Wet foods labeled for young puppies have different ingredients than wet foods labeled for senior dogs. This is because different life stages have different nutritional requirements. For example, puppy formulations are rich in DHA which is important for proper brain and eyes development. On the flip side formulations for seniors are particularly rich in glucosamine necessary for promoting enhanced joint mobility.
  • Grains – grains are commonly used in many dog foods as cheap fillers. They are rich in carbohydrates and keep the dog satiated but are not nutritionally rich. Additionally, recently more and more dogs are showing signs of grain allergies and digestive intolerances. Luckily, the modern market offers many grain-free wet dog food formulations
  • Byproducts, unnamed animal sources, food binders, sweeteners, artificial flavors and colors, additives, excess preservatives – the presence of the ingredients listed here are good indicators that the wet food you chose is of low quality. If used frequently or in larger amounts, these ingredients may seriously harm the dog’s overall health and wellbeing.

You also need to consider what's suitable for your dog, depedant on their age, breed, level of physical activity etc. Different ingredients are used in feed that is suitable for older dogs, younger dogs, active dogs and so forth.
