    Find out about this breed:

    • The Lhasa Apso originates from Tibet, and it is thought that this breed belongs to one of the 14 ancient dog breeds. However, the breed was only introduced to the UK in 1901.

    • Lhasa Apsos make very good watch dogs as they were originally bred by Tibetan Buddhist Monks to keep watch on the monasteries. This is as they are very alert and have a good sense of hearing, and surprisingly they have a very loud bark, besides the fact of their small size.

    • Unfortunately these dogs are not recommended for families with small children, as if angered or surprised they have the tendency to bite or be aggresive. Nevertheless Lhasa Apsos are loyal and like to please their owners.

    • These dogs like to be the only pet as they thrive off attention so it is advisable that you don’t keep other pets. It is also advisable that you do not leave them alone for long periods of a time as this will make them unhappy.

    • These breeds are prone to ear infections and eye problems and need regular check ups and cleaning, another problem they often encounter is parasites. However, kidney disease is the most serious health problem found in this breed. Therefore, if you are considering to get a Lhasa Apso it is essential you are willing to care for them appropriately.

    • These dogs do not like to exercise much, this makes elderly and those without gardens the perfect owners. Yet, due to their mountain roots they like to climb, so you may find your Lhasa Apso perched on top of your furniture.

    • Lhasa Apsos are the perfect option for those who are normally allergic to dogs as they do not shed.

    • These dogs live to be quite old, with some living to their early twenties. Therefore acquiring a Lhasa Apso puppy is a large commitment.
