Way back in the 17th Century Pointers were used to locate hares and then greyhounds were used to chase these hares. This is because Pointers have excellent speed, stength and endurance. However, Pointers are also perfectly happy doing adequate exercise and not being used as a hunting dog.

Pointer dogs are well built all over and graceful in their appearance. They need little grooming as their fur is dense, smooth and short and only needs a quick rub with a brush to minimise shedding. It is suggested that Pointer puppies will grow to be between 24-26 inches for females and 25-27 inches for males, and most Pointer's will weigh in between 45-75 pounds. The colourings of Pointer puppies can include lemon and white, orange and white, liver and white, or black and white.

Pointers make superb family pets as they will get along with all members of the family as their aggression levels are very low to non-existent, and love to play. However, obviously very young children do not always mix well with young clumsy Pointer puppies. They are social animals and are very loyal and affectionate to their owners, which makes them a very rewarding breed of dog to own. Pointers are also known to be intelligent and very independent dogs, making them good breeds for training. While training your Pointer puppy try to use positive reinforcement, rewarding your puppy for good behaviour and ignoring them when they are ill-behaved. Although these are fairly energetic and active dogs they will also enjoy relaxing and taking it easy, this is because of their natural desire to feel part of the pack.

Expect your Pointer puppy to live between 12-15 years, however this life expectancy is when your dog is well looked after and cared for.
