House training puppies so that they know where is an acceptable area to do their business takes time and patience. When a puppy is around 8 to 12 weeks old he will not be able to let you know when he needs to go. It is up to an owner to potty train a puppy to avoid any unnecessary messes. For tips on how to house train a puppy quickly, see below.

House Train a Puppy – Choose a Spot

When housing training puppies, you need to decide on a place that is okay for the puppy to use as his toilet. Once you have established this, take the puppy there.

Potty Train a Puppy – Command Word

Whenever you see that the dog is going to the toilet, choose a command word such as “potty” or “toilet” and say it while he is doing it. He will begin to associate your chosen word with this action. When he has finished his business praise the puppy enthusiastically. Take the puppy to this spot as much as you can so that he recognises its purpose.

Potty Training Puppies – The Crate

Before you put the puppy in his crate take him to the area first. Only put him in the crate after he has gone to the toilet. Only use the crate for a couple of hours at the most when you house train a puppy.

House Train a Puppy – Watch Habits

After the puppy finishes his food take him to the toilet area. Be sure to do this before he goes wherever he is. When you see the dog sniffing around on the floor this is generally an indication that he is looking for a spot to pee. At this sign, take him to his area to go.

Potty Train a Puppy – Extra Advice

Remember to always be patient when potty training puppies. Do not take frustrations out on the dog. House training puppies is all part of having a dog and it is not their fault if they do something wrong. Potty training puppies is the human’s responsibility.
