Alert UK dog owners: Snake kills dogs

NewsUK Dog NewsThursday 07 July 2011

King Charles Spaniel had to be put to sleep after the dog had been bitten by an adder that led to kidney failure in a backyard in Essex. The Blue Cross animal charity is now warning dog owners to be extremely careful and extra vigilant while walking their dogs. In event of an adder’s bit it is vital to contact a vet as soon as possible.

Although an adder’s bite is not usually fatal for pets, the warm weather has made the reptiles much more active, according to the experts. Since June, there have been several incidents of dogs being bitten by an adder. Shadow, a border collie dog from Little Totham, Essex, died after being bitten by an adder on a walk with its owner. Also a 9-year-old girl had to be hospitalised after she was bitten by an 18-inch-long snake in the New Forest, Hampshire.

Important: killing or injuring an adder is against the law as the snakes are a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.
