A man in his 30s who was badly hurt during an attack by two dogs on Brighton beach is still in a "serious but stable" condition in hospital.

The man suffered multiple bites during the incident near Brighton Pier, at about 06:15 BST on Friday.

A police officer bitten on his leg and hand, who was also treated in hospital, has since been discharged.

Sussex Police said a 40-year-old man from Brighton who was arrested over the incident had been released on bail.

The man was held on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, possession of a dog dangerously out of control, possession of a bladed article and possession of class A drugs.

Det Insp Ian Still said: "We believe that the two men were walking along the beach together in the early hours of Friday with the two dogs shortly before the attack happened.

"We are still keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident and hasn't yet spoken to police."

The two dogs involved in the attack are still being looked after by police.
