Fines for people who drop litter or fail to clear up after their dogs in Newcastle are being increased by 50%.

Newcastle City Council said the increase in fixed penalty notices from £50 to £75 followed calls from residents for a tougher approach.

The increase will begin in June with the dog fouling penalty introduced shortly afterwards.

The council said it had spent £150,000 on its environmental crime team and six extra officers would enforce notices.

Council leader Councillor Nick Forbes said nearly 40 wardens would work across the city.

He said: "We want to send a clear message that this kind of environmental crime will not be tolerated."
