Man amputates his dog leg to avoid vet fees

    NewsAnimal CrueltyTuesday 06 September 2011

A couple from California has been charged with animal cruelty after their dog was found in terrible condition.

A 1-year-old black Labrador mix was hit by a car in July in California (USA) and suffered a double fracture of the pelvis and a dislocated hip. A couple owning the dog decided to avoid elevated veterinarian fees and amputated its left hind leg on their own. The police found the dog tied to a post after its owner tried to amputate the canine’s leg without proper equipment or anaesthetics. According to the animal officers, the dog was not given any drugs during the ‘operation’ and must have suffered terrible pain.  The vets managed to save the dog, however had to amputate most of his leg.

The Friends of the Kern Animal Shelters Foundation is raising money for the dog. They hope to send the animal to Los Angeles for surgery, which will cost at least $8,000.
